Why rain is the most popular sleep sound

Rain is a natural pink-like noise: a dense, steady wash of tiny sounds with no rhythm to follow. It masks traffic and voices the way pink noise does (auditory masking1), but it sounds like something, not like a machine. For many people it also carries a feeling of being safe indoors, which may be part of its pull.
