Why students love brown noise
Brown noise became a study favourite because it’s the easiest noise to forget about, while still masking the sounds around you 1. It has no high hiss to tire your ears and no pattern to follow, so after a minute it fades into the background and takes the dorm, the kitchen or the library chatter with it.
Many people with ADHD say brown noise helps them settle into work. There’s no research on brown noise and attention yet: a 2024 meta-analysis found 13 studies of white and pink noise, which gave a small benefit to young people with ADHD and a small drop to those without, and none of brown noise 2. So: worth trying, and easy to test, since it’s free here.

How to study with it
- Pick the volume once. Just loud enough that you can’t follow nearby conversations.
- Use the timer as your study block. 25, 45 or 60 minutes. When the noise fades, take a break.
- Add pink if voices still get through. Brown noise is weaker in the speech range; a little pink fills it in.
- Same sound, every session. It can become a cue that it’s time to work.
Brown or white noise for studying?
White noise covers voices more strongly but can be tiring. Brown is gentler. A popular compromise is the voice blocker above: mostly brown, with pink and a little white. Read more in study sounds.

Questions
Does brown noise help you study?
For many people it does, mainly by hiding distracting sounds. Some people focus best in silence; try it for a few sessions and see.
Is brown noise good for ADHD?
Many people with ADHD find it helpful. Studies so far tested white and pink noise, which gave a small benefit to people with ADHD; none tested brown noise. It isn’t a treatment, but it’s easy to try.
Brown noise or music for studying?
Music with lyrics tends to interfere with reading and memorizing. Brown noise has nothing to follow, so it’s usually less distracting.
